There are two short biographies of Judge Belden in this collection. See Box 4170 for "Notes toward a Life of David Belden," by J.J. Farrell and box 4174 for "A Life of Judge David Belden," by W.S. Thomas, M.D.
David Belden was born in Newton, Connecticut on August 14, 1832 and came to California in 1853. He opened a law practice in Nevada City and was elected County Judge of Nevada County in 1859. He married Elizabeth Farrell in 1861. In 1865, he was elected state senator for Nevada County and served three terms. In 1869, he moved to San Jose and continued to practice law until in 1871, he was appointed Judge of the court for the counties of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey, to which was later added San Benito County, until the adoption of the new state constitution in 1879 when Belden was elected one of the Judges of the Superior Court of Santa Clara county where he served until his death in 1888.
